Job Title: UV Testing Engineer
Salary: £25,702 or £31,931 gross per annum Dependent on Experience *
Location: RAL, Harwell Campus- Oxfordshire
Contract Type: 6 Months Fixed Term Contract
Hours: Full Time (We understand the importance of work-life balance, and are happy to discuss the possibility of flexible working with applicants however this role is based on-site 4 days per week)

As a UV testing engineer you will carry out a programme of tests, research, and investigations to support development. You will play a critical role in helping to advance a breakthrough UV lamp technology created by scientists at STFC’s Central Laser Facility.
The technology is a novel technique to generate UV light that achieves higher intensity and lower cost without toxic chemicals and achieving forty times the lifetime of industry-standard mercury lamps. This low-cost, scalable technique has the potential to disrupt many industries including water treatment and air sterilisation.
Operating from within the dynamic and fast-paced Innovation team, you will conduct key experiments and provide support to our mission to commercialise a unique UV light source and realise economic and societal impact.
The intention is to create a spin-out company before the end of 2023 centred on this technology and there is scope for your involvement in developing a new business.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
- Conduct an experimental programme with the prototype to de-risk and support development to a minimum viable product (MVP), the experiments include:
- Stabilisation and measurement of baseline performance of the prototype
- Optimising the source to maximise the output of UV
- Provide input to guide further design and guide the experimental programme.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and any special requirements:
Essential:
- Degree in a STEM subject or equivalent experience
- Able to manage an experimental campaign in the laboratory
Desirable:
- Experience working in a laboratory environment [Essential for Band D]
- Experience with any of the following areas [At least one area of experience essential for Band D]
- Spectrometry
- UV Photonics or optics
- Microwave engineering (particularly high power)
- Mechanical or electrical engineering
- Good communication skills
- Experience in working in an early-stage start-up
- Experience in supporting the development of plans to commercialise new technologies
