The Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department. The staff at the department numbers some 100. The Institute of Seismology belongs to the Department of Geosciences and Geography. The Institute performs research, education, continuous Earth monitoring, and helps government and private organizations in their projects requiring seismological expertise.
The Faculty of Science invites applications for a permanent position
UNIVERSITY RESEARCHER IN SEISMOLOGY
starting from January 2023 or as agreed.
The focus of the position is to lead the mobile Finnish Seismic Instrument Pool and to conduct research in seismology, preferably using the pool instruments. The pool consists of 1200 short period and 44 broadband instruments (https://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/FLEX/FLEX-EPOS+Seismic+Instrument+Pool ). The position isatthe Institute of Seismology, which has a long history of studying the structure and evolution of the Earth’s crust using active seismic methods including seismic refraction, reflection and tomography using mobile seismic instruments.
We seek a research scientist to be the head of the pool operations during the construction phase and beyond. The head of the mobile pool is expected to develop the pool’s routine functions and management; to support, service, and consult seismic instrument pool projects; to lead and collaborate in national and international externally funded seismic experiments and deployments.
A successful candidate has active research interest in seismic imaging and/or monitoring. He/she has basic knowledge of seismic instrumentation, and experience in designing and leading (dense) array deployments and/or active seismic acquisition campaigns. The candidate is proficient in data processing using community and industry software tools and packages.
We expect a PhD degree in related fields, demonstrated experience in field based seismological research, in seismic data acquisition and processing, in seismological imaging and/or monitoring applications, and in management and international networking. The starting salary of the position will be ca. 4000-5000 euros/month. Positions at the University of Helsinki always start with a six-month trial period.
