The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF CZECH

for a permanent appointment as of 1 January 2023, or as agreed. There is a six-month trial period for the position. The position is in the Department of Languages.

The Department of Languages at the Faculty of Arts researches and teaches the Czech language, as well as Czech literature and culture, as part of Slavonic and Baltic studies. The university lecturer will be responsible for teaching Czech in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in languages. The appointee will provide both language teaching and theoretical teaching, and supervise theses. They will also teach students of other languages in courses related to their specialist field. The university lecturer will contribute actively to planning and developing teaching and to administrative work.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a university lectureship must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and supervise theses.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention is paid to scholarly publications and other research results of academic value, teaching experience relevant for the position, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, and other teaching merits.

The university lecturer is expected to provide teaching in the Czech language and have expertise in related language, literary or cultural studies. The appointee should be an active researcher interested in contributing to the wider development of teaching and research.

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. The language of instruction in the present position is Finnish. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire a level of proficiency sufficient for participating in the activities of the academic community within two years of being appointed. Support for studying the language will be offered. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have excellent skills in Czech and English. Knowledge of other Slavic languages will be considered an asset.

WHAT WE OFFER

The salary will be based on levels 5–7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,500 to €4,500, depending on their qualifications and experience.
