The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki is the only institution of higher education in Finland to train veterinarians. It has about 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs approximately 150 academic staff, which is nearly half of the entire staff. The degree programmes have been accredited in accordance with the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT). The Faculty has four departments (Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, Equine and Small Animal Medicine, Production Animal Medicine, Veterinary Biosciences) and Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The Faculty is located at Viikki Campus together with the Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, and several independent units operating in life sciences. The research and teaching activities at Viikki Campus are supported by state-of-the-art infrastructures including core facilities e.g. for electron microscopy, genome analysis, proteomics, in vitro and in vivo animal imaging and electrophysiology, mouse behavioral phenotyping and biosafety laboratories for work on pathogenic microbes.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of a

UNIVERSITY LECTURER / CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR

starting as soon as possible after the recruitment decision is made. The position is fixed term until 31 December 2024. The teaching and research field of the position is veterinary pathology.

The position will be at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, connected to the multidisciplinary environment of the HOH Helsinki One Health network organization. The team in veterinary pathology consist of a professor, several senior-level lecturers/researchers (with two board certificates), and residents, interns and doctoral researchers. Technical support staff works in a histotechnology laboratory and a modern necropsy room. The diagnostic veterinary pathology service includes necropsies, biopsies and cytological specimens from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and private clinics/animal owners.

Depending on the appointee’s qualifications, the duties will include supervision of undergraduate theses as well as lecturing and research in veterinary pathology. The duties also include diagnostic work of animals (including cytology and biopsy samples and necropsies) as well as development of teaching and participation in administrative tasks and in other developmental work.

Qualification requirements and assessment of the qualifications

The position is filled primarily as a university lecturer or as a clinical instructor. The appointee is required to have been licensed as a veterinary surgeon and be able to provide high quality teaching based on research. An appointee to the position of a university lecturer shall hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. An appointee to the position of a clinical instructor shall either hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or a national or international specialist degree in the field; ECVP/ACVP Board exam.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention is paid to teaching and research merits. 

The appointee must be competent in Finnish and have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.

The position may also be filled as a university instructor, if necessary. Prerequisites for a university instructor are applicable second-cycle degree (i.e. licensed as a veterinary surgeon) and teaching experience. In case of a university instructor, fluent Finnish is an absolute must.

Salary and benefits

The salary is based on the salary system of universities and the monthly gross salary will be about 3 300–4 600 euros depending on the applicant’s merits and career stage. The appointment includes a six month probationary period.
