The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.

The Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF ART HISTORY

to be appointed on a permanent basis as of 1 August 2022. The field of the position is art history.

Research and teaching in the discipline of art history focus on art, architecture and visual culture as historical and contemporary phenomena. The research is linked to international research in the field and engages in dialogue with several disciplines.

The university lecturer of art history will provide teaching and supervision based on the curriculum at all levels of both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Duties requiring good cooperation skills include participating in the planning and development of teaching together with the other staff of the department, degree programmes and discipline. The university lecturer will supervise and examine theses, conduct research in the field and contribute to the further development of the discipline.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

In accordance with the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee must hold an applicable doctoral degree, have cooperation and planning skills, and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses, which are most often written in Finnish.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to academic qualifications and merits, such as publications and experience in research projects, as well as teaching and supervision experience, pedagogical skills, the ability to produce learning material and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills. Teaching and supervision at the bachelor’s level and in multidisciplinary bachelor’s and master’s programmes are an essential part of the appointee’s job description. The discipline of art history belongs to the Department of Cultures, which excels in multidisciplinary research and teaching in the arts. The successful applicant has good interaction skills, scholarly networks and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary teaching and research community.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least a satisfactory command of spoken and written Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. Knowledge of other languages will be considered a further asset.

SALARY

The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €4,500, depending on their qualifications and experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.
