Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning (USP, https://www.helsinki.fi/en/degree-programmes/urban-studies-and-planning-... ) is a multidisciplinary degree programme between two universities (University of Helsinki and Aalto University). In the University of Helsinki, students in the study programme can study in four different target degrees and in four different faculties. The study program partner Aalto University has its own target degrees. The study programme combines several fields of urban studies and planning from the University of Helsinki and Aalto University into a progressive and interdisciplinary curriculum. Courses also include co-teaching to ensure multiple perspectives on core topics. There are continual exchanges among disciplines and between theory and practice in the study programme.

The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences are jointly inviting applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN URBAN STUDIES AND PLANNING

starting from 1st August 2022 (or as agreed) through July 31, 2027.

Urban studies and planning is understood broadly as a field that explores e.g. urbanity, urban society, urban policy, urban politics, urban environments, and urban planning with multitude points of views.

The position is physically located in the Department of Geosciences and Geography, Faculty of Sciences, which is coordinating the study programme. The university lecturer position is teaching-oriented, but the lecturer is also expected to carry out research linking to the existing research at the university related on broad and versatile field of urban studies. The main teaching responsibility consists of 4-5 courses in the study programme per year. In addition, following the multidisciplinary nature of the program the university lecturer is expected to participate in co-teaching in some other courses in the study programme to promote our multiple perspectives. The university lecturer supervises and examines MSc theses in the programme and works as a thesis contact person and traineeship contact person. The university lecturer participates also the developing of the study programme. The teaching language is (mainly) English.

The appointee to a university lectureship holds an applicable doctoral degree, is able to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses.

As the MSc programme in Urban Studies and Planning is a multidisciplinary study programme and it combines research and teaching traditions from several disciplines, an ideal candidate is expected to have proven expertise in multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary research and teaching development and is expected to be broadly familiar with research in different and versatile subfields of urban studies. As teaching at the study programmes is strongly rooted to research, scientific publications and other research results of scientific value will be used in the evaluation. In addition, when assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention is paid to the relevant skills of the candidate, broad teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials also online, other teaching merits and a teaching demonstration. Demonstration of practices of open learning and continuous learning and existing national and international networks on the broad field of urban studies and planning are considered a merit. A successful completion of the duties requires good skills in co-operation, communication, and organisation. In addition, as the field develops rapidly, the university lecturer is expected to actively follow the advancements of the field in the scientific and professional spheres, and to participate national and international working groups.

The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary range will be approximately from 4000 to 4500 euros per month.
