The Department of German at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to the German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language und Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas of Gender Studies,Cultural Studies, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established. More than 6400 students are enrolled.
Your personal sphere of influence:
As a university assistant prae doc, you will have the opportunity to work at one of the largest departments of German Philology worldwide consisting of an inspiring group of people dedicated to a manifold range of research and academic teaching.
Your future tasks:
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:
- Participation in research projects on Austrian literature, reading and reception studies and psychonarratology
- Interest in transdisciplinary research
- Participation in publications, academic articles, presentations
- The successful candidate is expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months
- PhD project within the fields of Austrian literature or Austrian literary history or reading research or digitalization of literature/literary culture
- Work on the dissertation and its completion
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Involvement in the organization of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
This is part of your personality:
- Above-average degree in German Philology (Magister or MA or UF German, preferably in NDL)
- Diploma/master´s thesis in "Neuere deutsche Literatur"
- Profound knowledge of Austrian literature and Austrian literary history
- High ability to express oneself in speaking and writing
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- IT user skills
- Teamwork skills
Also desirable
- Presentations and talks at conferences and workshops
- Articles in academic journals or contributions to books
- Experience in planning, organizing and conducting conferences and workshops
- Experience in literary business
- Teaching experience
- Knowledge of university processes and structures
What we offer:
The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.

Fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 3277,30 (on a full-time basis) increases if we can credit professional experience.
