The Department of German at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to the German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas of Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established. More than 6400 students are enrolled. 

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a university assistant prae doc, you will join our broadly based research team in variationist linguistics around the Special Research Programme (SFB) "German in Austria. Variation - Contact - Perception". The focus of our research is on phenomena of language variation and language change in the context of Austria yesterday and today.

The team, in which you will be closely involved, currently consists of several prae docs and post docs as well as student assistants. What distinguishes us as a team is an intensive and lively exchange in joint research on the one hand, which goes hand in hand with a strengthening and expansion of individual research profiles on the other.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You will contribute to our various research activities and scientific studies on language variation in Austria. This includes contributing to language data collection and analysis as well as publications of research results and other dissemination activities (talks, media contributions, conferences, etc.).
  • We expect you to complete your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
  • You will work on your dissertation (with a focus on variationist linguistics in the area of syntax and/or morphology).
  • You will independently teach courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement.
  • You will take over administrative tasks in research & teaching.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed degree (Diplom, MA, teacher training) in German philology (with a focus on German linguistics)
  • Research focus (evidenced by theses, previous publications, project experience, (planned) dissertation project) in the field of variationist linguistics with a focus on grammar (syntax and/or morphology).
  • Experience with the collection, processing, and analysis of language data, experience in the application of methods from the field of digital humanities, especially with regard to data processing (e.g., transcriptions, annotations)
  • Experience in scientific writing and research methods in variationist linguistics
  • Didactic skills / experience in e-learning
  • Very good English skills
  • You are a team player with high social/communicative competence.

What we offer:

The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.
