The Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies  founded in 2020, provides a cutting-edge scientific training for doctoral candidates in nine fields of historical and cultural studies (ancient history, art history, Byzantine and modern Greek studies, classical archaeology, Egyptology, European ethnology, history, Jewish studies, prehistoric and historical archaeology). It aims at attracting talented, highly motivated, and curious students from all over the world and guides them towards original research at the forefront of cutting-edge historical and cultural studies in a vibrant and dynamic community in the heart of Europe.

The DSHCS offers three 3-year positions of University Assistants (predoc). Successful candidates will work in one of the 16 Departments of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies and will join one of the DSHCS' seven research clusters (Ancient, Byzantine and Medieval Studies; East European and Eurasian Studies; Archaeology and Material Culture; Art History and Visual Culture; Social and Economic Spaces; State, Politics, and Governance in Historical Perspective; Women’s and Gender History). They transcend periods, disciplines, and regions and offer an exceptional opportunity to study in a truly cross-disciplinary setting.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You conduct research and write your dissertation.
  • You teach classes independently on Bachelor’s and Master’s level according to the collective bargaining agreement.  
  • You participate in your department's and the DSHCS' activities and workshops.
  • You present your research results at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

This is part of your personality:

  • Above-average MA or equivalent in a field of study relevant for the respective positions
  • High level of motivation and commitment to successfully complete your doctoral studies within the anticipated time frame
  • Collaborative, team-minded and pro-active attitude
  • international experience
  • High level of written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English

Fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 3578,80 (on a full-time basis) increases if we can credit professional experience.

Model 3: The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
