The Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy is continuing with a strategy of sustained investment in both academic staff and infrastructure to provide a catalyst for significant growth in both research activity and student experience. The role

The role of University Mentor will include supporting the degree apprenticeship student learning experience using a range of approaches and modes of delivery appropriate to the work allocated. 

Specifically, you will act as first point of contact for students and their employers working in a variety of organisations across the country, providing pastoral care and mentoring. Students on the programme, attend the University for four blocks of teaching throughout the academic year, with each block being two weeks long.  A large emphasis on the programme is given to work place activity, which contributes significantly towards the degree and the award of apprenticeship. Acting as mentor to students and employers relating to this work, you will address questions, explaining processes, monitoring progress and working with the programme team.  You will signpost, as required, to module academic leads and welfare and other University services as required.

You will also conduct progress reviews meetings with students and their industrial line managers, meeting in person, or using webinars and other technology. During these progress reviews meetings you will develop an enduring relationship with your assigned students and their employer representatives and review learning progress and challenges. You will contribute to the development of the role and work in close contact with other members of the programme team.  You will report to the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Programme Lead.

About you

For this post you will:

  • Possess a breadth of knowledge pertaining to the Civil Engineering industry and be a confident and capable mentor, comfortable and professional when in contact with students and their employers.
  • Ideally, have experience of working within a degree apprenticeship or other work-based learning programme.
