As one of Coventry's biggest employers, we offer some pretty impressive benefits including an excellent pension scheme and generous holiday allowances.

How will you get job satisfaction?

This is an ideal opportunity for you to share your engineering knowledge and experience with the next generation of young engineers, who are keen to learn.  You will gain great job satisfaction as you watch these young engineers develop through their academic studies and hands on workshop experience under your guidance. You will also have the opportunity to support students with project work and entry to national student competitions such as IMechE challenges, Shell Eco Marathon and Formula Student motorsport at Silverstone. Finally, you will see the students graduating as professional engineers at the end of their studies.

As an experienced machinist you will be able to programme, set, operate CNC lathes, milling machines (or equivalent) and other workshop equipment.  You will have the opportunity to work with our students to produce innovative designs, including precision engineered components.  You will demonstrate to the student good industrial practice, for instance sharing how S.Q.D.C.P. (safety, quality, delivery, cost and people) need to be considered and planned for in the design and manufacturing of parts.  You will get satisfaction from the knowledge that you will be getting our students ready for their future careers.

Why work at Coventry University?

Working in the School of Mechanical Engineering, you will be committed to contributing to our continued success in the delivery of engineering programmes to the next generation of young engineers. You will join a School with high levels of teaching quality and student satisfaction (ranked 7th in the Guardian University Guide 2022 for our courses in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace and Manufacturing Engineering).

Why are we recruiting this position?

Due to the continued growth and success of our undergraduate and postgraduate engineering teaching, we wish to appoint a Technical Skills Instructor (TSI) in Manufacturing. We require a full time permanent team member with an established background in manufacturing who will contribute to the production of low volume components and share manufacturing knowledge and expertise with students.

What will your main duties be?

Working for the Development Officer in a clean modern workshop environment, the successful candidates will be required to provide manufacturing/machining and technical support in the use of the current facilities including:

  • Setting/programming/operating CNC machinery (Haas metal cutting machine tools)

or

  • Setting/operating manual machine tools (to include traditional milling, turning, drilling, etc)

or

  • equivalent manufacturing equipment

What type of experience will you bring?

Experience of working in a low volume/prototyping environment is very desirable, along with a sound background in precision engineering or equivalent. You will be willing to work in a flexible manner, be able to work effectively both under your own initiative and as a member of a team and promote and support positive learning to individuals and groups of students.

What type of working style will see you succeed?

You will be an active team player and contribute to the creation of an open positive and helpful environment. You will want to share our passion for delivering a positive student experience that puts excellence in teaching and learning at the heart of everything we do and will be able to demonstrate significant knowledge in your machining skills.

You will enjoy learning new production practices and techniques, for instance 3D printing and EDM. You will also be keen to experiment with new techniques to optimise the manufacturing process so that you can teach the students how to exploit the potential of the technology safely.

Shift work is not a requirement in this role, however you will need to work flexibly and support Open Days to showcase our facilities to prospective applicants.
