Technical CRISPR Screening Specialist

A new opportunity has arisen for an experienced CRISPR specialist to join the Cellular Generation and Phenotyping team (CGaP) at the Sanger Institute. 

About the role:

You will lead part of a cross functional group using advanced gene editing technologies, such as CRISPR, to deliver functional genomics projects in partnership with faculty teams.

You will join the team as a Technical Specialist to support the expansion and diversification of our Functional Genomic platform, with the aim of expanding into new challenging models e.g. human cancer cells, iPSC, organoids, primary cells and technologies such as CRISPRi and Saturation Genome Editing. As a Technical Specialist within these projects, you will:

• Lead and support a team of research assistants to perform large-scale culture of cancer and iPSC lines
• Troubleshoot current methods and identify process improvements
• Focus on the cutting-edge CRISPR technologies being developed to drive continuous evolution
• Develop and mentor junior staff, with options for line management
• Collaborate closely with faculty groups within the institute to deliver projects

About you:

You will have strong time management and organisational skills, both personally and for scheduling team workloads. We function in a collaborative environment, where you will need excellent team working and communication skills. You will use these skills to inspire, develop and mentor junior staff, as well as working closely with the Senior Scientific Managers to successfully deliver projects. You will be able to functional independently to pursue new technologies and solve complex issues in the area of cell culture and functional genomics.

About the research:

We are a core research group, responsible for providing cell biology resource and expertise to the wider institute. We do this by running multiple, diverse, high-throughput projects for faculty teams across the Sanger Institute. Our current portfolio of projects include, genome wide CRISPR screens of iPSC and cancer cells, differentiation of iPSCs toward neuronal lineages, organoid derivation, iPSC derivation and Spatial Genomics associated with the Human Cell Atlas Initiative.

Our role is to support the institute in its aims and for that, we continually strive to remain at the forefront of cutting edge research. Namely translating academic research into large-scale projects, which push the boundaries of our understanding, allowing the Sanger to remain a world leader in genome research.

The projects that this role will lead on are part of a larger initiative to investigate gene essentiality on an individual patient level. The outcomes of these projects will contribute to the understanding of cancer biology and patient-to-patient variability. The overall aims are to support the faculty groups to identify novel cancer drug targets.
