The Department

The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Computer Science, Durham University - ranked 6th in the Complete University Guide. The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.

 

The Role

Applications are invited for 2 x Course Tutors on the exciting TechUP initiative, which will be delivering a new TechUPWomen programme over the next 12 months.  The post will include teaching, monitoring, supporting and tracking students completing the programme in general IT and IT support, this will be done through the Thinkific e-learning platform, a Slack group and live online lectures.

Applicants will be fully trained on all course content but should have a working knowledge of the subject area, the curriculum is expected to include:

    Typical Role Requirements

    Service Delivery

    • Take responsibility for day to day decision making within own area of responsibility for operational aspects of service delivery, translating external requirements into practical application and advice. 
    • Plan and organise own workload with or without involvement with project work streams. 
    • Interpret, curate, design and present information and data. 
    • Implement and monitor protocols, procedures, processes and regulations. 
    • Monitor and report incidents. 
    • Implement and monitor recognised procedures to ensure compliance and meet University values of inclusion, diversity and participation. 
    • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and the University’s values.

    Teaching and Learning Support

    • Familiarisation with all programme learning materials
    • Delivering 2 x 3hr live online teaching sessions per week.
    • Maintaining learner attendance records and facilitating the distribution of session recordings for non-attendees.
    • Attendance at 2 x in person Saturday events for learner support and networking
    • Tracking and marking of assignments and assessments
    • Supervise service users and stakeholders undertaking activities, events and project work.
    • Monitoring learner online community channels and providing learner support
    • Provide high-level technical guidance and advice to academic stakeholders to support teaching, research and learning activities within the field of general IT and IT support. 
    • Responsible for organising and maintaining teaching, and learning environments. 
    • Provide technical guidance and advice to solve problems and help shape the delivery of teaching, learning and research outcomes. 
    • Liaise with partner organisations regaridng learner progress to identify learners in need of additional support

     

    Knowledge and Experience

    • Experienced service practitioner, planning and co-ordinating of teaching with inter-related activities. 
    • Specialist support with problem solving and query handling. 
    • Take responsibility for carrying out more specialist risk assessments and incident resolution. 

     

    Planning and Organising

    • Carry out more in-depth investigations, searches and research information and data to identify trends and patterns. 
    • Record, monitor and collate information, analyse patterns and trends as part of teaching and research activities. 
    • Support the capture of business requirements from users and work with colleagues to translate these into recommendations for future service provision. 

     

    Communication/Networking/Stakeholders

    • Reactive and proactive service provision with others to deliver an excellent stakeholder experience. 
    • Relationship building, network participation internally and externally to build and update knowledge and skills. 
    • Provide support to team members to share technical knowledge and expertise. 
    • Engage with external peers and specialists to exchange knowledge and information. 
    • Contribute to business meetings, working groups and committees to help shape service delivery and stakeholder expectations. 
    • Liaise and network with specialist professionals to exchange knowledge and ideas internally and externally to the organisation. 
    • Any other reasonable duties. 

    Person Specification

    Candidates applying for a grade 6 post must outline their experience, skills and achievements to date which demonstrate that they meet or that they have the potential to achieve the essential criteria. 

    Essential Criteria

  • Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.

  • Strong digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking system, project planning, financial systems.   

  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).

  • Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Relevant industry and professional recognition and certification of achievement of skills and knowledge.

  • Evidence of continuing professional development. 

  • Regulatory, local and national professional knowledge and experience of compliance. 

  • Experience of working in a team. 

  • Ability to solve problems and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions. 

  • Demonstrable ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues. 

  • Experience of implementing policy and procedures. 

  • Professional knowledge and expertise in IT and IT support.

  • Experienced practitioner who has led teaching within an educational, commercial or industrial environment. 

  • Extensive experience of relationship building and ability to turn opportunities into long-term knowledge exchange and collaboration. 

  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience teaching and supporting learners from minority and vulnerable groups
