Teaching Technician

Hands-on lab work, face-to-face with undergraduates, strategic planning and experiment preparation, working closely with the academic team to deliver an excellent student learning experience - all part of a day’s work. The Teaching Technician will join a seven-strong technical team in the planning, preparation and delivery of activities in the Chemistry CETL labs. Looking after all aspects of the lab they will liaise with many different parts of the organisation in pursuit of this. 

  • Day-to-day delivery of the excellent student experience in the University Chemistry teaching labs.
  • Preparing Materials for Lab activities.
  • Maintaining Chemical stocks and solutions.
  • Maintaining Lab instruments and equipment.
  • Managing the lab resources and procurement.
  • Negotiating with key stakeholders in the service provision.
  • Providing technical input to specialist procurement and designing small pieces of apparatus.
  • Ensuring the fabric of the space is maintained to an appropriate standard.
  • Hosting international Summer Schools

You will have a sound understanding of Chemistry and experience in the delivery of undergraduate Chemistry practical labs or similar. You will be highly organised with good time management, communication and multi-tasking skills. You will work well in a busy environment and use delegation skills to achieve tasks to tight deadlines, have experience of various types of standard lab instrumentation. Evidence of continuous improvement and willingness to learn new skills and the ability to train others would be expected. You have the ability to take responsibility for the delivery of pre-defined goals.  You work well with others and adapt quickly and calmly to achieve the wider objectives of the team.  Specialist training in instrumentation and Handling Regulated Materials will be provided.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the undergraduate teaching technician team as we work to deliver an excellent in-lab experience to all our students.  We offer the opportunity to focus on a particular year group while experiencing the activities across all year groups within the Chemistry curriculum. We have an exciting array of in-lab instrumentation for the students to use – and you will be supporting their learning by maintaining and running samples on some of these instruments – IR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GC, GCMS -after appropriate training, and even teaching the students to run their own!  It is a varied and vibrant environment, with lots of moving parts, are you up for the challenge?

Work pattern: Full time/Mon-Fri 9-5

Salary: £26,444 - £29,605 per annum
