The Aston Professional Engineering Centre (APEC), sits within the School of Engineering and Technology as part of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. APEC delivers innovative work-based learning solutions, from Foundation Degree through to Masters level. Able to tailor delivery to fit organisational needs, APEC works successfully with companies in the UK and worldwide. Aston was the first institution in the UK to graduate degree apprentices. For suitable applicants, this position will also include the appointed role of Head of Department – Aston Professional Engineering Centre.

This role requires a unique combination of academic and industrial knowledge and expertise alongside leadership and managerial skills to successfully run this externally facing Department. The Head of Department will lead and effectively manage the academic professional engineering department in line with the School strategy. They will be responsible for all aspects of the Department including strategy, planning, resourcing, staff, budgets and portfolio of programmes. 

APEC is a Department that delivers work-based-learning programmes which are developed with industrial partners. The postholder must have an understanding of industry needs, both current and future, and an ability to engage with new and existing partners in order to develop and deliver high quality programmes that meet these needs. They must also have an understanding of the requirements of work-based-learning programmes, including quality assurance and funding requirements.

We are looking for a highly organised, motivated and competent leader, and manager, who can inspire their team, work with industry and manage a dynamic workload. You must have a proven track record of managing teams of people and resources. You should have experience of working in, or closely with, industry and an ability to communicate with stakeholders internally and externally. Experience of, and passion for, the development and delivery of work-based-learning programmes is essential.
