Job summary
The Department of Metabolism, Digestion & Reproduction is looking for a Teaching Fellow who is as committed as the department to the development and delivery of excellent education and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to the continuing professional development of its staff.
The Department has the responsibility for delivering 3 MSc programmes and 2 MRes programmes plus several Short Courses. It supports the MBBS programme with the delivery of core taught components including 4 intercalated BSc streams. The Department also supports approximately 200 scientists and clinicians studying for doctoral degrees (PhD or MD(Res)).
Duties and responsibilities
Your responsibilities will span across a wide range of areas, from providing core teaching and learning support to programme academic responsibilities and career development.
You will be expected to contribute significantly to the development and implementation of the MSc programme by maintaining a detailed understanding of developments in genetics and genomics. The applicant will lead two modules (M1: Molecular Genetics and M4: Genomics in the Laboratory) and share the lead for another module (M5: six-month student research projects).
For module 4, you will deliver two laboratory teaching practicals (each two weeks long) using laboratory techniques commonly used in biomedical research. You will also contribute to teaching development, using a range of established and innovative teaching / assessment methods as appropriate. A further important aspect of the role is to promote best practice and excellence in education within the department.
Essential requirements
You should have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline and a teaching qualification and/or experience in higher education is essential. You should be strongly motivated to educate students and have the skills necessary to interact effectively with staff and students at all levels. When not teaching, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to departmental research.
You need to have excellent written and oral communication skills. They need to be well organised, able to prioritise and work to deadlines with little day to day supervision. As well as working autonomously, showing initiative and flexibility, you need to be able to work cooperatively with others.

This is a full time, open ended postion which will require some flexibility at busy times of the academic year as teaching is delivered in module blocks of varying duration.
