The Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in political philosophy. You will have a PhD in Philosophy (successfully awarded or submitted with viva pending). The appointee will contribute to the teaching of political philosophy within the department. We also need the appointee to be able to contribute to the delivery of the first year Philosophy curriculum in at least one of the following areas: Logic, Philosophy of Mind, Ethics, and Epistemology.

We want to continue to tackle the issues faced by underrepresented groups in philosophy whether in staffing, curriculum, teaching, the public face of the disciplines, or in other ways. And so, you will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation, through your experience, work, ethos, identity, or in some other way.

We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. And so, we are welcoming, supportive, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values. We are, therefore, particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in Philosophy and other areas in the Arts, such as those of underrepresented genders (e.g., women, non-binary, trans) and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.

Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data in your application until shortlisting is completed (shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter – for this reason we advise applicants to begin the application process as early as possible, so that you are aware of what we require).

About the role:

As a Teaching Associate you will be expected to

  • deliver innovative teaching and curriculum design
  • contribute positively and proactively to the teaching culture, especially considering issues of underrepresentation
  • supervise and examine dissertation students
  • support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and learning skills
  • take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students, dealing with sensitive issues
  • be responsible for administrative duties

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract, commencing in September 2022 until 31st July 2024. Hours of work are part time, 18.13 hours a week.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Neil Sinclair, Head of Department email: [email protected]; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.

Our University is a supportive, inclusive, caring and positive community. We warmly welcome those of different cultures, ethnicities and beliefs – indeed this very diversity is vital to our success, it is fundamental to our values and enriches life on campus. We welcome applications from UK, Europe and from across the globe. For more information on the support we offer our international colleagues, see our Moving to Nottingham pages.
