ABOUT OQC
At Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) we are building quantum computers to enable life-changing discoveries: from new drug modelisation to longer-lasting battery technology and portfolio optimisation. We have launched Europe’s first Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS) – to bring quantum to our customers’ fingertips and help them improve their operations and trailblaze new commercial and scientific approaches.
Our team is composed of 40 people with various backgrounds in quantum physics, nanotechnologies, hardware, software and business operations from marketing to intellectual property. We are all bound by the desire to put OQC at the forefront of the quantum revolution and help solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.
ROLE OVERVIEW
As a Systems Integration Engineer at OQC, you will bring together the various components vital for controlling a quantum computer, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and functions together.
This role could require designing pieces of software that control specific instruments, the subsequent integration of these instruments into the full-stack of our control system, solving automation problems or helping characterisation and benchmarking processes to assess and improve the overall Quantum Computer performance. Here, you will be required to work closely on multiple and varied projects. These will be within our multi-disciplinary teams of physicists, nanotechnologists, electrical engineers, software developers, and more towards OQC’s mission of building quantum computers to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designing a robust, scalable, deployable control system that connects all the subsystems required for a fully functional quantum computer (software, control hardware, quantum processors)
- Work closely with the quantum team to improve characterisation & benchmarking capabilities of quantum processors
- Making sure that the software stack is capable of communication with various hardware by using standard communication protocols and writing low-level drivers
- Solving automation problems, both from control and testing perspectives
- Work closely with our software, classical hardware and quantum teams to assure a smooth integration of all the components
- Identifying possible bottlenecks in the system and coming up with engineering solutions for them
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- 3+ years of commercial software engineering experience
- A bachelor’s degree in a scientific, mathematical or engineering discipline
- Experience in hardware control, embedded software, drivers, low-level languages (e.g. C/C++) and communication protocols
- Strong problem solving, troubleshooting and analysis skills
- Ability to work effectively in an agile team environment; proponent of best practice software development techniques including testing, continuous improvement and deployment etc.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Experience using low latency test equipment, running experiments involving multiple instruments
- Knowledge of various communication protocols, I/O standards
- Experience with FPGAs
- Experience in scalable system design and system automation
- Familiarity with quantum technology
LOCATION & TRAVEL
OQC’s office is located in Shinfield, Reading. There will be a requirement for occasional travel throughout the UK and elsewhere abroad for conferences, meetings and engineering visits.
APPLY NOW
Please apply via https://apply.workable.com/oqc/ . As part of our application process we ask that you also provide us with a cover letter outlining why you think you would be a good fit for the role and what attracts you to OQC. Applications without a cover letter including this information will not be considered.
We look forward to hearing from you!
At OQC we are not just hoping you’ll fit in our culture. We aspire to thrive, as a company and as people, thanks to your diversity of thought and background. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and we are committed to providing our team members with a work environment free from discrimination, where everyone is treated with respect. Our employment decisions are based on business needs, talent and merit and all our colleagues share in the responsibility for fulfilling our commitment to diversity.
