About the opportunity

This tightly knit, vibrant team is expanding and we are looking to recruit a Senior Technical Officer with experience in X-ray fluorescence, X-ray absorption, and X-ray emission spectroscopies. Currently we run three XRF systems (one benchtop and two portable systems) and are procuring an Australian-first lab-based XAS/XES facility following a successful ARC LIEF2023 bid.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • collaborate with other professional and academic staff to provide expert advice across a range of specialist equipment (X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy)
  • support the day-to-day operational aspects of Sydney Analytical laboratories
  • provide sound, expert technical support and advice to researchers and students using the research facilities, aiding the research and teaching work and providing collaborative research input for projects being undertaken by the work area
  • ensure the laboratory is properly maintained and compliant with WHS requirements

About you

  • a keen interest in spectroscopy and/or materials analysis and a proven track record in X-ray fluorescence / X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy
  • excellent communication skills and a passion for training new users in specialised equipment
  • tertiary qualifications in Chemistry, Engineering or Physics
  • experience in implementing safety procedures in a multiuser environment
  • advanced computer skills, including storing research data and using electronic lab notebooks.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. For a continuing position, you must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian Permanent Resident. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
