The Academic Section is responsible for managing all aspects of student and academic administration and plays a central role in delivering the University’s commitment to excellence in education across the University. The University is going through an exciting period of strategic development with the growth and expansion of flexible product development and delivery.

We are looking to appoint a professional and well-organised individual to the post of Summer Schools and Short Course Manager within the Essex Apprenticeships and Summer Schools Team (EASST). EASST is responsible for Higher and Degree Apprenticeships, academic / professional Summer Schools, and is involved in the development of new models of academic delivery.

Duties of the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to lead the Summer Schools Hub. Working with academic colleagues and leaders, members of the University Steering Group and Professional Services teams across the University, this role supports the University’s ambitious growth agenda and ongoing commitments to interdisciplinarity and excellence in both education and research.

The Hub leads the management and development of our Summer School and short course provision including CPD, lifelong learning and other forms of flexible product, ensuring appropriate consistency in approach, efficiency and scaling up for existing provision, reinforcing and maintaining the links with our three existing flagship Summer Schools: Essex Summer School for Social Science Data Analysis; Institute for Analytics and Data Science Summer School and Human Rights Centre Summer School. The Hub will also lead the development of new Summer School activity across a range of areas.

Skills and qualifications required

The successful candidate will have substantial experience of working in higher education administration or an equivalent context and will bring excellent organisational skills to the post alongside an ability to deal flexibly with a wide range of responsibilities and multiple priorities through experience developed while operating in a fast paced environment. You will be a clear thinker with a sound knowledge and understanding of both academic frameworks and regulations and deploying project management principles to support the delivery of agreed objectives. Experience of policy, process and procedure development, budget management and supervising or managing staff are essential along with an appreciation of the role of IT systems in supporting business processes. Experience of brand development and management would be an advantage.

With an ability to lead and motivate colleagues in pursuit of agreed objectives, you will possess excellent communication skills, including a high standard of written English, and be able to demonstrate good judgement and consider new ideas. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to establish productive working relationships with a wide range of people, deliver effective and authoritative advice and work as part of a team.

Applicants should possess an honours degree (2.1 or above) or substantial equivalent experience, a minimum of 3 A levels or equivalent qualifications and 5 GCSE passes at grades A-C or equivalent, including English Language and Maths.
