The School of Computing and Engineering is expanding its research and teaching portfolios into Civil Engineering and seeks to appoint a Subject Area Leader to guide the development and delivery of this new discipline.

As part of its aim to build upon its success in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), the School is investing millions of pounds to grow this new activity in our research-intensive environment. Our new BEng/MEng course in Civil Engineering will take its first students in September 2024 and its first taught postgraduates a year later.

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional person, with a strong track record in Civil Engineering research, to contribute to our vibrant research community alongside development of new academic provisions and teaching facilities.

You will have a doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, a relevant professional body membership, and have or be working towards Chartered status (Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, Institute of Highway Engineers, or Permanent Way Institution) with a requirement to gain Chartered status within 3 years of employment. In addition, you will have an established quality portfolio of research in one of the following areas: 

- hydraulics or environmental engineering
- structural engineering
- geotechnical engineering
- transportation

In addition to teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level, you will have experience of course development and management, be self-directing and committed to supporting the learning of students.
