Stipendiary Lecturershipin French Language

Applications are invited for a 12-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in French for the 2021-22 academic year, from 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a full-time, fixed-term post for one-year subject to funding and continuing need. The post is designed to fulfil the teaching of French in College, including collaborating on the planning of the French course and supporting access and outreach initiatives.

Duties

  • 12 weighted hours’ tuition per week during Full Term, including grammar, translation and other written language classes, conversation classes, and formal speaking and listening work in preparation for Final exams, including all associated marking and written feedback.
  • Setting and marking collections (termly exams held in college), and assisting students in their French language revision.
  • Submission of accurate and timely teaching records each term including written reports in time for 8th Week (end of term) report readings.
  • Regular liaison with the Modern Languages team on educational and welfare matters.
  • Together with the Tutorial Fellow in French, play a significant role in the undergraduate admissions process, open days, and support access initiatives both during and outside of full-term.
  • There may be a need for exchange teaching for other colleges within the agreed teaching hours.
  • If requested, assist with organising teaching.
  • Collaborate with the Tutorial Fellow on course design for undergraduate French language teaching, and in regular revisiting of course programmes and materials to ensure the course is up to date.
  • If required, provide cover during periods of leave
  • Administrative duties relating to French as requested by the Tutorial Fellow and/or Senior Tutor.

Starting salary of £27,511 (Stipendiary Lecturers range of £27,511 to £30,942).

Skills and experience

  • Fluent written and spoken French, equivalent to native speaker level.
  • Excellent understanding of French grammar and sensitivity to style and register in French and English.
  • Excellent understanding of the cultural context of at least one French speaking country;
  • The ability to be an effective and inspiring teacher of French in the tutorial context.
  • An understanding of the needs of high achieving undergraduates with the ability to assess the work of high performing students, using up-to-date techniques across a range of media.
  • Have recently spent time (e.g. residence, study, or extended travelling) in a French-speaking country.
  • A high level of academic achievement, commensurate with career stage. A minimum of an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject. A relevant postgraduate qualification would be desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills good command of written and spoken English
  • Sensitivity to deal effectively with pastoral matters that may arise.
  • Good organisational, IT and planning skills.
  • Enthusiasm for involvement with the wider life of the college and access and outreach activities.
