Staff Scientist: Spatial Genomics

Updated: about 2 years ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The world-famous and internationally respected Wellcome Sanger Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Scientist to join the newly established high throughput spatial genomics initiative as part of the Scientific Operations division.

About the Role

  • Lead in the design, establishment, improvement and scaling of methods for spatial genomics
  • Develop novel cutting-edge spatial genomics techniques such as in situ  sequencing, base-specific in situ  sequencing, and be involved in scaling the application of these methods.
  • Working in close collaboration with the Bayraktar (Cellular Genetics) and Campbell (Cancer Ageing and Somatic Mutations) groups
  • The systems developed will be applied to understand the effect of cell-cell interactions and cellular context on cell function and probe the effects of somatic or germline mutations in primary tissues or in vitro  model systems in the context of development, health and disease.

About the Research

The recent development of spatial genomics technologies such as in situ  sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and spatial multi-omics has allowed us to accurately map the spatial organisation of tissues, and understand cell-cell interactions. This is particularly powerful when coupled with single-cell ‘omics approaches to map novel cell types into their tissue context.

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a leader in these fields, especially as part of the global Human Cell Atlas project that aims to understand the diversity, context and function of every cell in the human body and in terms of understanding the role and function of somatic mutations in normal and disease human tissues.
