Faculty of Science is founded on basic scientific research applied and complemented by the disciplines of geography and geology. Thanks to our solid research infrastructure and internationally distinguished researchers, our research is of a high standard. Among the Faculty’s strengths are also our wide-ranging study opportunities. We offer 8 bachelor’s programmes, 13 master’s programmes and 7 doctoral programmes. At the moment, we have 4,895 students.
The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences at the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science, and to provide scientific results for national and international environmental and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scales, and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University.
The Faculty of Science invites applications for the position of
STAFF SCIENTIST (UNIVERSITY RESEARCHER) OR LABORATORY ENGINEER
in atmospheric mass spectrometry. The position is permanent starting from 1.1.2022 or according to agreement.
The position is in University of Helsinki hosted sub-unit in ACTRIS Centre for Reactive Trace Gases In Situ Measurements (CiGas) responsible for aerosol precursor characterization with mass spectrometric techniques. The core activities of the staff scientist/laboratory engineer are to ensure sustainable and traceable high-quality data and data products of in-situ measured atmospheric condensing vapours and direct aerosol precursors, such as sulfuric acid and highly oxygenated molecules with a known uncertainty.
The work includes coordination of atmospheric mass spectrometric measurements and related instrument maintenance in the HU laboratory and in the field in close connection with the technical staff of HU. To achieve this, development, testing and implementing advanced measurement technologies and data evaluation algorithms, and enhancing the competence of the operative personnel by training, is needed. The person nominated needs to be experienced in in-situ chemical ionization high resolution mass spectrometry and its data analysis and instrument operation. The work requires independent and versatile approach as the new calibration centre is a small unit with diverse duties. Also good cooperation skills are needed as the centre is part of larger international central facility and training and co-operation with research groups is essential.
The nominee needs to have doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences or similar (physics, chemistry etc.). The starting salary will be ca. 4000-5000 euros/month (staff scientist) or ca. 3500-4300 euros/month (laboratory engineer) and depending on the qualifications and merits of the nominee.
Faculty of Science is an equal opportunity workplace committed to advance wellbeing and diversity in science and education. We welcome applicants from a variety of genders, linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and minorities. We support the compatibility of work and family-life and promote gender equality in science.
The application must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae and any other documents that may affect the selection.
