Newman University offers a range of benefits to members of staff. These inlcude the following:
Holidays
All members of staff at Newman have an entitlement to 35 days annual leave per year (based on a full time contract) in addition to the 8 statutory bank and public holidays, and University closure days. Your annual leave entitlement will be detailed on your contract of employment.
Pension Schemes
Teachers’ Pension Scheme
All members of academic staff, regardless of the number of hours worked, are automatically included in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) unless they choose to opt out. Contribution rates for the scheme are 6% from the employee and 14% from the employer. When joining the scheme it is possible to transfer in service from previous schemes and to buy additional pension. If you are interested in these options, please visit the TPS website or contact the Human Resources Department.
Group Personal Pension Scheme
Members of professional administrative and support staff are invited to join the Aviva group personal pension scheme. The scheme is administered by Moneywise Financial Services and a representative from Moneywise visits Newman two to three times a year to provide financial advice and to meet with new staff members who wish to join the scheme. Contribution rates for the scheme are 6% from the employee and 14% from the employer which is in line with the contributions for Teachers Pension Scheme.
Childcare Vouchers
Newman University offers childcare vouchers as a flexible way for employees’ to meet the costs of childcare. A proportion of salary is ‘sacrificed’ in exchange for the vouchers, which are non-taxable and exempt from NI contributions. This involves deductions being made from your salary on a monthly basis. Childcare Facilities
Newman has a crèche facility on site called Whippersnappers. The crèche is operated by an independent operator and arrangements for use of this facility should be made direct to the operator on 0121 478 3163.
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
The University offers its staff confidential support for them and their family via the Employee Assistance Scheme, available via a free helpline telephone number at any time during the day or night. The scheme offers counselling, medical, legal and financial support.
Health Care
BHSF is a health cash plan that can help you manage the cost of dental treatment, eye tests, new glasses and contact lenses, professional therapy treatments, health consultations and much more. For more information please contact HR or Finance for a leaflet.
Discounted Travel Scheme
The Company TravelWise scheme allows staff to have a discounted annual travel card without the initial outlay of the full cost of the card. Newman pays for the annual card, and then staff have 12 monthly payments deducted from their salary. Advantages of the scheme include:
- No price rises for 52 weeks
- No queuing for bus tickets/passes
- Savings on tickets, up to £138.80 per year on the cost of a Faresaver and even bigger savings for those with combined rail/metro passes.

Sports Centre
The sports and recreation facilities include:
- Fitness Suite
- Squash courts
- Sports Hall
- Gymnasium
- All Weather Pitch
Discounted sports and gym facilities are available for staff and include use of our fully equipped fitness suite, which provides a combination of cardiovascular, fixed and free weight equipment, and the use of the large Sports Hall.

Library
All staff can take advantage of the University’s extensive library services . The Library has a vast collection of books, videos, DVDs, CDs and other specialist materials. The University’s Staff ID card acts as a borrowing card. For further details contact the Library Liaison Manager on ext 2339.
Theatre Club
Newman University are signed up to the Theatre Club allowing all staff to enjoy offers on top musicals, plays and other related special deals with up to 70% savings.

Cycle to Work Scheme
The Newman University Cycle to Work Scheme (hereafter referred to as the Scheme) is part of the national Cycle to Work Initiative established by the government to encourage more people to travel to work by bicycle.
Cyclescheme enables employees to get a bike tax-free, saving on average about half the cost. It’s completely free to join, and easy to apply online.
