The University of Southampton is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to join our Wellbeing team as a Specialist Practitioner. The Practitioner will work with a caseload of students to provide advice and guidance for issues such as emotional wellbeing, mental health difficulties, safeguarding concerns and academic concerns. They will also chair Student Support Review meetings attended by students and other University departments to support students if concerns are raised about their health, wellbeing and behaviour which may be impacting on their academic progress and/or general management of life at University or on placement.

The Wellbeing Practitioner team is part of the Student Wellbeing Service.  The service offer includes:  a 24/7 Open Door drop-in service, wellbeing workshops, events, a team of wellbeing practitioners, self-help resources and short-term counselling.

 Main duties include:

 Manage a case load of students by providing individual one to one support within a short-term support model.

  • Duty practitioner for the Open-door service between the core hours of 9 – 5 a minimum of once a week.  
  • Contribute to risk reviews and risk management strategies.
  • Contribute to the management processes of those student cases that present as a concern.
  • Review requests for Student Support Review Panels and Chair these panels.  
  • Create bespoke support plans for the student.
  • Engage across the University with other specialist roles.
  • Proficiently use Microsoft Teams to conduct online video appointments to meet the students’ needs and use data management systems to manage your caseload.
  • Contribute to University wide projects with specialist knowledge.
  • Actively promote the work of the Wellbeing Team both within the University and the wider local community
  • Work collegially with other colleagues to take a multi-disciplinary approach which creates a seamless student experience. 

 The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, and proven experience in relevant sectors such as Social Work, Probation, Occupational Health, Mental Health Advisers, or have experience working with a diverse student population; those impacted by emotional wellbeing, mental health, harassment or safeguarding.  Successful candidates must have a relevant degree or be able to demonstrate an equivalent skill level and/or hold a relevant specialist qualification.

This post is offered on a permanent part-time basis of 4 days a week.  The role offers flexible working with a blend of on campus and home working. The successful candidate will get involved in the wider Wellbeing Team’s outreach work on occasional weekends. The position offers a starting salary of £34,980 as well as additional benefits, such as a generous holiday allowance and additional university closure days.   We will support your long term future too, with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts.
