The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is a large and dynamic department in the Faculty of Science and Health.  The School is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students. 

The School is a multi-disciplined School with hardware and software elements.  An opening for a technical Grade 7 technician has arisen to assist with the day-to-day running of the School and laboratories.

Duties of the Role

The successful applicant shall be highly motivated and self-disciplined, exhibiting self-guidance skills in a dynamic learning environment. 

The post holder will be servicing duties within the School’s teaching facilities, mainly within the Electronic Hardware, Mechatronics, and Brain Computer Interface laboratories. Duties will include but are not limited to PCB design, student project support, 3D modelling, and maintaining a wide range of laboratory research equipment and teaching resources.

You will provide technical support and some teaching and research assistance to undergraduate/post-graduate students and external research associates and will be required to support academic and teaching staff within the laboratories. 

The School also has several research laboratories that the post holder will have an active role in supporting, maintaining, and serving health and safety aspects. 

Furthermore, outside term time, the post holder will undertake tasks such as updating and developing departmental hardware (for teaching and research) and maintaining laboratory infrastructure. There will be a requirement to carry out Health and Safety duties throughout the School, inspection and testing of electrical appliances, and other aspects of Health and Safety. Training will be provided.

Skills and qualifications required

The successful candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of Windows and preferably knowledge of the Linux operating system. An understanding of at least one programming language (preferably Python or C, but not essential) and proficiency in analog and digital circuit design, RF design, PCB design, embedded systems, and associated peripheral devices are essential for this post.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and must therefore possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a larger team.
