Digital Team – Engineering Chapter

Full time or part time options available – permanent opportunity

We are flexible on location – happy to consider remote and hybrid working. We really want you to feel part of the team and get to know us – so visits and spending time with us on campus in Exeter will be really valuable.

Who are we?

We are the UoE Digital Team and we are delivering one of the boldest digital transformations in the higher education sector. Our vision is ambitious – we want to re-invent the higher education destination making it more accessible than ever before. With Ash Roots as our Chief Digital Officer we are building a revolutionary digital team. Rich in diversity and expertise we will help the University realise its true potential.

We work in an agile way and have organised the team into chapters (groups of people with the same skill sets) and squads (made up of people from the chapters who can work autonomously and to their own goals). We want to test and champion new working models in our squads that push the boundaries of inclusivity, location, and flexibility. Our users will be at the heart of everything we do and we’ll develop new ways to deliver value, make things easier and generate new income along the way.

Our Engineering Chapter...

  • Creates immersive high-quality solutions by applying new and innovative methods and technology. Following an agile development approach with DevOps at the core.
  • Follows DevOps practices automating as many tasks as possible to deliver solutions.
  • Delivers new services, and maintains existing platforms to enable delivery

What you’ll be doing...

As a Backend Software Engineer, you will be a key part of the team delivering innovative digital solutions using a cloud-first approach with modern technologies to enable our staff and students to achieve their goals.

Help build our new digital platform on AWS, working with modern technologies, making recommendations and helping to identify the right tools for the job.

Work as part of an agile team using modern frameworks to develop and support innovative solutions and solve problems.

Lead the development of automated testing capabilities around digital development, deployment, and software testing in a DevOps environment.

We’re really looking for…

  • Technically fluent in programming languages – think Python, Typescript, JavaScript.
  • An understanding of web services and possess other appropriate technical skills.
  • A self-starter who can see the bigger picture; as comfortable working independently as they are working within the team.
  • The ability and initiative to build something from scratch.
  • An awareness of common development patterns, best practises and familiarity with serverless and microservice architecture.
  • Recent experience of managing automated build and deployment tools and proven experience of working in an Agile DevOps environment.
  • Ability to break down barriers and build lasting beneficial relationships. Having the ability to adapt and demonstrate determination and focus within your work is essential.
  • Understanding of Cloud Platform Services (IaaS, SaaS, PaaS), ideally within AWS.

If you’re interested, please apply right away – we’ll review applications and interview throughout the advertising period! (don’t miss out). Apply with your CV and short a cover note telling us how great you are and how your skills line up to what we’re looking for!
