The Post

You will be part of the skills and knowledge exchange function at the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC), where you will assist with the delivery of a key project investment from the UK Government Department of Environment Food & Rural Affairs to support the aquaculture sector across the UK.

Reporting to the Head of Skills and Talent, you will be responsible for developing online learning content for an audience who will use this material to direct their own learning. The intended audience will include health and environment employees within the aquaculture sector across the UK. The project will involve working collaboratively with partners from SAMS UHI and Lantra, Scotland.

To be considered for the role, you will have a good honours degree in marine biology and/or ecology or a related discipline, a keen interest in science communication, a passion for translating your knowledge into practical, industry-facing skills, and an innovative problem-solving approach.

Skills, training and knowledge exchange is an evolving area of work that requires a motivated individual with a desire to take on new knowledge and skills, in order to assist with the delivery of training content. You will have first-class communication skills with a can-do, helpful attitude, as well as excellent attention to detail and command of the English language. You will have the ability to manage several tasks at one time, in a timely manner, and be able to deal with colleagues and external contacts confidently.


Description of Duties

  • Leading and supporting the development of skills training content and resources for e-learning, working independently and as part of a team
  • Building technical training programmes (face to face and/or online) for industry customers
  • Supporting knowledge exchange activities, and planning and managing own workload, with guidance from colleagues as required
  • Working closely with e-learning platform and tool providers and working with the team to develop SAICs own e-learning platform systems
  • Writing reports, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, for external organisations


Essential Criteria

  • Experience of supporting the development of practical, industry-facing knowledge and training (face to face and/or online)
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn to navigate digital tools, including e-learning platforms for content creation
  • Experience of collaborative working both in-person and remotely, and an ability to work constructively within a team environment
  • Track record of successful collaborative project working
  • Ability to plan and organise own work effectively
  • Embrace and embody SAIC’s values of support, agility, integrity and collaboration


Desirable Criteria

  • Developing and maintaining an e-learning platforms
  • Knowledge of marine phytoplankton microscopy and identification
  • Experience of working in biology and/or ecology R&D field environments, planning and conducing field experiments and/or collecting samples from lacustrine and marine environments.
  • Confident user of Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Teams and Zoom
  • Knowledge of e-learning course design principles and learning management systems
  • Experience of basic project management skills
