Senior Video Producer

Cardiff University is looking for an experienced video producer to create engaging, story-led bilingual video content for its digital channels and to support overarching filming operations.

With proven expertise in shooting, lighting, sound and postproduction, the video producer will lead video production activities within the central Communications and Marketing department, contributing to the effectiveness of brand-led marketing, advertising, and communications campaigns, alongside the capture and promotion of newsworthy accomplishments and high-profile University events.

The role

Reporting to the Head of Digital Communications and with access to on-campus studio spaces and high-end production and post-production equipment, the video producer will work with a diverse range of stakeholders (e.g. students, staff, academics, researchers, and external industry leaders) to unearth stories from across the University and produce creative video content that aligns to the University’s brand, strategy, and vision.

Leading on all aspects of the video production process, from idea conception and storyboarding to the logistics of technical and physical shooting schedules, the video producer will support the University’s mission to adopt a digital-first / campaign approach to storytelling, maximising the usefulness and purpose of video content for a wide range of digital channels (e.g. website, social media, YouTube, and intranets).

Alongside overseeing budget related to filming costs, this role will line manage a Production Assistant, whilst making best use of content creators and video producer from across other areas of the University, as well as external production companies and video agencies.

This post is full-time and open-ended.

Salary: £39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

•    Project manage and deliver quality video production for Cardiff University to support the University’s strategic priorities.
•    Manage the video production process from start to finish, utilising extensive experience of shooting, lighting, sound, and postproduction.
•    Contribute creative ideas for video content to support marketing, advertising, and communications campaigns, whilst advising on approach based on audiences and platforms (e.g. use of high-end video cameras vs use of smartphone video cameras).
•    Shoot and edit videos for multiple platforms and formats, including websites and social media (e.g. Instagram, TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook).
•    Maintain an up-to-date and catalogued library of video and audio content on current media formats. Revise and refresh as technology develops.
•    Ensure video content is bilingual and adheres to the University’s brand guidelines, as well as accessibility regulations.
•    Line manage a production assistant.
•    Manage a video production equipment inventory.
•    Manage financial resources and budgets in relation to video equipment, production materials, and software.
•    Manage the logistics of shooting schedules, co-ordinating locations, people, and equipment.
•    Ensure health and safety policies are adhered to, risk assessments are considered, and footage licensing is acquired.
•    Nurture and utilise relationships with in-house content creators and external production companies / agencies.
•    Provide specialist advice and training to wider teams regarding filming operations, production, distribution, and licensing.
•    Provide technical video production advice and liaise with external and internal production specialists to deliver filming for high-profile events (e.g. support the live streaming of Graduation ceremonies).

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1.    Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent work-related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2.    Proven experience of managing the video production process, including planning, storyboarding, shooting, lighting, sound, and postproduction.
3.    The ability to understand video briefs, and to conceptualise and present ideas to suit the audience, platform, and purpose.
4.    The ability to manage budgets, equipment inventories and video asset libraries.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
5.    Experience of line managing people and resources, particularly in relation to video production.
6.    Experience of working in a collaborative environment with a diverse range of stakeholders, clients, or audiences. 

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
7.    Strong project management, organisational and communicational skills.
8.    The ability to travel often to shooting locations on and off campus.
9.    Experience of managing the logistics of shooting schedules, co-ordinating locations, people, and equipment.
10.  Experience of managing relationships with video agencies and/or video production companies.

Desirable Criteria

11.    Proficiency with animation and motion graphics.
12.    Knowledge of video content algorithms and trends.
13.    Fluency in Welsh, both written and oral.
14.    Experience of working within Higher Education.
15.    Commercial awareness or business acumen.
