Do you want to contribute towards the development of lateral flow test for Chagas disease?

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and it is one of the major neglected tropical diseases, affecting 6 million people worldwide, mainly undiagnosed, with 75 million estimated to be at risk.

Chagas is endemic in Central and South America but spreading fast due to global warming and global migration, causing severe cardiac complication, often fatal, decades after the first infection.

We computationally engineered variants of a key antigen and tested them against human sera samples from Chagas patients. We are now ready to produce the first LFT prototype (patent pending) to test long-term stability.

Your role will be to express and purify the engineered variants in E. coli in large scale following a standardised process. Experience in using middle-size fermenters and/or biophysical techniques would be advantageous.

The project is sponsored by MRC, initially to 31st December 2024, but could be extended further based on future grant applications. The project is in collaboration with the LSHTM and non-for-profit organisation TroZonX17.

Minimum qualification required is an MSc in Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or related disciplines OR Equivalent qualifications plus considerable work experience in relevant role OR Substantial work experience in relevant role.

A PhD plus relevant technical/scientific experience focused on protein expression and purification aimed to structural and/or biophysical studies would be an advantage.

The work will be based at the University of Nottingham in the School of Biosciences at the Sutton Bonington Campus.

This role is offered on a fixed term basis until 31/12/2024. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.
