About us

The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS), is one of six schools that make up the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) at King College London. The School drives translation of world-leading basic science into advances in clinical practices with activities focusing on the Cardiac Biomedicine Department of Diabetes and Vascular Biomedicine. 


About the role

The post-holder will provide laboratory support to the research group led by Prof. Ajay Shah (BHF Chair of Cardiology) with specific focus on metabolomics projects. This will include operation and maintenance of an Agilent HPLC/QTOF mass spectrometer dedicated to metabolomics, sample preparation, data analysis and management, report writing and day-to-day operation of general lab equipment in the facility under the guidance of the research staff. A background in chemistry or prior experience in HPLC is desirable. They will work closely with research staff and students on a day-to-day basis including providing training.

The postholder will also contribute to lab maintenance and administration such as ordering and procurement, equipment maintenance, cataloguing of samples, and monitoring of research budgets. Experience of research-related regulations such as health and safety, biological safety and the human tissue act is desirable.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fix-term contract for 2 years.


About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related subject with practical experience of working with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry in an academic or industry setting 
  • Excellent technical knowledge of LC/Q-TOF equipment or similar high-end mass spectrometers 
  • Excellent knowledge of mass spectrometry data analysis, data interpretation and computational methods using software such as Metaboanalyst, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, Peaks Scaffold etc. 
  • Experience in preparation of biological samples to a high standard 
  • Experience of calibration and troubleshooting technical problems with MS and LC & UHPLC chromatography systems 
  • Experience of general laboratory administration/management 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Excellent organisational, communication and writing skills 
  • Familiarity or expertise in R, python or similar languages 
  • Flexible and cooperative approach to working with the ability to demonstrate broad biology and HPLC/MS skills 
  • Trained in health & safety regulations
