Role Description
We welcome applications for a new Senior Technical Officer post from those with relevant knowledge and experience in gas turbine engineering or other engineering sector including assembly, maintenance and operation of complex systems, plants or machinery.
About the Role
This post is linked to the Gas Turbine Engineering Laboratories, within the Aerospace division. The successful applicant will be embedded within the technical team which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a number of medium and large-scale research facilities including wind-tunnels for aerodynamic and propulsion integration research and numerous test rigs for gas turbine system related research such as multi-stage compressor and novel combustion systems.
About You
You will hold an HNC/D and/or an apprenticeship in an engineering discipline, and/or have significant experience as mechanical fitter in complex engineering assemblies. You will be able to operate plants after pertinent training and as per manufacturer’s technical documentation for operation and maintenance. You will have a very good practical understanding of thermal engine systems preferably in the area of gas turbine engines, including basic understanding of compressor, burner and turbine systems. You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of common machine elements such as bearings, seals, couplings, shafts, fastenings etc. You will be working with machinery and assemblies built to tight tolerances. You will have basic machining skills (turning, milling, metal working) to make simple rig parts when needed in the School’s dedicated workshop. You will need to have good time management skills and demonstrate adherence to deadlines related to testing activities. Attention to detail, methodical work in a tidy fashion and alignment with the agreed Health, Safety and Environment procedures and risk assessments are skills of paramount importance. Finally, basic understanding of the operation of propulsion systems, fundamentals of aerodynamics and/or stress engineering will be an advantage, as will basic Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills.
The ability to obtain a UK security clearance is required in order to be appointed into this position.
