The School of Medicine is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Technical Assistant to work as part of a dynamic and supportive team.

You will be required to work within the School of Medicine, providing support across our research and teaching facilities. You will be responsible for general laboratory maintenance, including routine care of equipment and decontamination, sterilisation and disposal of laboratory waste.

As part of the Operations Team, you will occasionally be required to cover reception duties so a courteous supportive manner and good communication skills will be necessary.  The postholder would also be required to undertake regular manual handling tasks as identified by the line manager.

Candidates should have NVQ 1/GCSE level D-G or equivalent qualification, or work-related experience. The position will require someone who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team environment and is able to adapt to a broad range of duties and challenges in an exciting and rewarding environment

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), based at Heath Park, is open ended and is available immediately.

Salary: £21,828 - £22,214 per annum (Grade 2).

Job Description

Job Purpose 
To provide core/building technical support to the School of Medicine

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties

  • Ensure laboratory areas are maintained through cleaning and undertaking routine care of area, machinery and equipment, disposal of general and controlled laboratory waste and undertaking stock control, ensuring adequate security and levels of stock are maintained (preparing simple solutions under instruction) and stock is distributed as required.
  • Be responsible for decontamination, sterilisation and disposal of materials and laboratory areas.
  • Ensure laboratory areas are prepared for use by others, by issuing equipment to staff and students and provide guidance on its use and preparing and clearing away as required.
  • Assist with the assembling and manufacture of equipment, as well as checking on satisfactory operation of the equipment (e.g. take appropriate action to report faults and instigate maintenance or repair processes, as per standard protocols).
  • Deal with simple and routine enquires from internal and external customers in a professional manner, following established procedures, referring complex enquires to relevant staff members, ensuring all relevant facts and information needed is recorded and passed on.
  • Provide reception service when necessary, this may include maintenance of routine records and updating information as required.
  • Work on own initiative using creativity to complete set tasks ensuring standard guidelines and procedures are adhered to, recognising when to refer a problem to others.
  • Participate actively within the work team, setting an example and showing a flexible approach to delivering team results.
  • Be responsible for manual handling operations –moving equipment and the collection/sorting/storing of all deliveries.
  • Practice health and safety, environmental and/or infection control methods in line with established School of Medicine and Cardiff University procedures.
  • To undergo personal and professional development via University led courses or external intuitions in order to enhance performance.
  • Assist with general technical support within the teaching areas when required.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Basic Numeracy and Literacy (for example NVQ 1/GCSE level D-G)
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience of using and maintaining appropriate machinery and equipment
  • Experience of working in a technical support environment
  • Experience of using IT packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, email and web.
  • Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Ability to deal with customers and other employees in a professional manner
  • Evidence of working well as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary
  • Ability to deal promptly, effectively and courteously with requests for information or services
