Offer Description

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Senior Researcher within our Division of Imaging Science and Technology. This is a fixed-term appointment for up to 5 years depending on availability of funds.

The successful candidate will work within the ScanDan/PIPaRD research group. This position is funded by the Neurii funded SCottish AI in Neuroimaging to predict Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disease (ScanDan) Grant. The ScanDan/PIPaRD research group is joint-funded by the ScanDan Grant and Prediction of Individual Risk of Dementia (PIPaRD) funding, which is a related MRC funded, 5-year PICTURES programme Grant, that has been running since 2019.

The work will develop quantitative predictors of future dementia risk for individual patients, using routinely acquired NHS brain scan data supplemented by genetics and clinical data where available.

You will be based at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, one of Europe's largest teaching hospitals where the School of Medicine provides outstanding opportunities in medical education and training supported by world class research facilities.

Your priorities will include:

  • Play a lead role in establishing the research project, developing objectives, and accessing local and national healthcare data within a safe haven environment
  • Perform research related to the major goals of the project
  • Write up results for progress reports and publications
  • The post holder will be involved in the training and supervision of undergraduate/ MSc/ PhD students and visiting staff, as necessary

Who we're looking for:

  • Honours BSc and/or MSc degree in mathematics/computer science/engineering plus a relevant PhD.
  • Extensive background in mathematics/computing/engineering
  • Well organised, conscientious, and reliable with good problem-solving skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills, having the ability to clearly communicate research
  • Excellent computational skills including machine learning and experience with SPM neuroimaging This translational work will of necessity involve working with large healthcare data sets and images and therefore previous experience, or adaptability, in working with such data and with clinician scientists is crucial.
