The Institute of Cancer & Genomic Sciences is one of the leading cancer research institutions in the UK with an international reputation, excellent facilities and an active research atmosphere. This position is funded by a prestigious CRUK Programme Foundation Award to investigate the role of the arginine methyltransferase, PRMT5, in breast cancer progression. The position is funded for 2 years. The post holder will provide technical support for Dr. Clare Davies’s group, and will be responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the laboratory. They will also interact with and facilitate the research carried out by the post-doctoral fellows and students within the group.

The candidate should have experience with human cell culture, Western blotting, molecular cloning and DNA transfection. They should be able to work independently and within a team and should have experience with troubleshooting technical problems and supervising junior members of the laboratory. Lastly, they should be able to maintain clear and up to date (paper and computer) records of laboratory data, maintain computer databases of bacterial glycerol stocks and plasmids, and ensure that up-to-date COSHH/GMO assessments are generated/maintained.

Main Duties:

  • You will be responsible for assisting in managing the experimental laboratories.
  • You will use your in-depth knowledge of methods and procedures to advise on techniques and experimental procedures being used by researchers and/or students. This will involve communicating with colleagues at a range of levels and inexperienced students.
  • You will need to be able to diagnose and resolve problems and suggest solutions in regard to techniques and experiments.
  • Carry out specialist technical and experimental procedures which will need you to use your judgment to assess the correct technique to use, and to consider how these may be improved, referring to your manager for approval on any proposed changes.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience with human cell culture, Western blotting, molecular cloning and DNA transfection.  
  • Ability to work independently and within a team and should have experience with troubleshooting technical problems and supervising junior members of the laboratory.
  • Extensive relevant workplace experience, equivalent professional qualification or degree in an appropriate subject.
  • GCSE level 2 (A*- C) or equivalent level 2 qualification in mathematics and English. 
  • In-depth practical knowledge of relevant technical and scientific methods.
  • Extensive experience of similar laboratory based work, together with familiarity with a wide range of laboratory equipment.
