This is an opportunity for a senior researcher with advanced research and communication skills to make a real contribution both to delivering Lancaster University’s contract with the new National Institute of Health Research’s (NIHR) Research Support Service (RSS) and progressing their own research career, building on their progress being an independent researcher within the field of sustainability in health and care. Working with the RSS Sustainability Strategic Theme lead this role will develop support and resources for others applying for research on sustainable health and care topics as well as considering sustainable research conduct and approaches across all research supported by the RSS Hub and national service. This role will have a key RSS staff development function to improve knowledge and skills across the RSS workforce in research sustainability.
The RSS aim is to provide researchers, especially those applying for and in receipt of NIHR funding (but not exclusively as support for other open peer reviewed funding programmes can be provided) with free access to support, advice and expertise. Lancaster is host to one of the eight RSS hubs and has been awarded a multi-million-pound grant until September 2028 to support the delivery of this new national NIHR Research Support Service for England. The hub will provide specialist support as the national NIHR RSS Social Care Specialist Centre
Lancaster University’s Research Support Service hub will be delivered in partnership with the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester, and Manchester Metropolitan.

You will work as part of 1) a team based at Lancaster University who lead the provision of the RSS and 2) within one of the Division of Health Research’s research themes. The Division has several strong research themes: mental health, health inequalities, end-of-life care, health economics, ageing and organisational health and well-being.
You will have a background in an area of relevance (e.g. social sciences, health service or social care research), ideally experience in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and experience of working collaboratively with partners within and outside the academic setting. You will also have a strong track record of high-quality peer reviewed publications/grant income appropriate to your career stage.

The position is available for immediate start and we are open to discussing flexible working arrangements including working week and days/hours worked, flexible start and finish times or condensed hours.
The role is open to being undertaken remotely but there will be certain duties/responsibilities that require in person presence at Lancaster University. The balance of these will be agreed with the successful candidate.
You will join us on an indefinite contract however the roles remain contingent on external funding which at this time is due to come to an end on 30th September 2028.
