Division of Health Research, in partnership with the Department of Sociology. Social Care Research (NIHR Research Support Service).

This is an exceptional opportunity for a senior researcher with advanced research and communication skills to make a real contribution to delivering Lancaster University’s contract with the new National Institute of Health Research’s (NIHR) Research Support Service (RSS) while progressing their own research career. Building upon your progress as a researcher within the field of Social Care with a specific focus on children and young people, you will work within the RSS Social Care specialist centre team. The role will develop support and resources for others applying for funding for Social Care and will play a key role in RSS staff development to improve knowledge and skills across the RSS workforce in supporting Social Care research.

The RSS aims is to provide researchers, especially (but not exclusively) those applying for and in receipt of NIHR funding with free access to support, advice and expertise. Lancaster is host to one of the eight RSS hubs and has been awarded a multi-million-pound grant until September 2028 to support the delivery of this new national NIHR Research Support Service for England. The hub will provide specialist support as the national NIHR RSS Social Care Specialist Centre.

Lancaster University’s Research Support Service hub will be delivered in partnership with the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester, and Manchester Metropolitan University (see https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/news/lancaster-university-leads-multi-million-pound-grant-for-new-nihr-research-support-service-for-england for more information)

You will work as part of a team based at Lancaster University which leads the provision of the RSS and both within one of the Division of Health Research’s research themes (e.g. mental health, health inequalities, end-of-life care, health economics, ageing and organisational health and well-being) and within the Department of Sociology’s research priority areas that include social and economic inequalities across a range of substantive topics, including climate change, poverty, migration and social work practice and policy, and intersecting inequities (e.g. class, gender, race and ethnicity and sexuality).

You will have a background in a relevant area (e.g. social sciences, social care research), ideally experience in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and experience of collaborating with partners within and outside the academic setting. You will also have a strong track record of high-quality peer reviewed publications and grant income appropriate to your career stage.

The RSS team and the Division of Health Research provide a friendly environment that strongly supports the needs of its employees and which actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. The Faculty is committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies and has held a Silver Athena SWAN award since 2014 in recognition of its good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

The position is available for an immediate start and we are open to discussing flexible working arrangements, including working week and days/hours worked, flexible start and finish times or condensed hours.

The role is open to being undertaken remotely, but there will be certain duties/responsibilities that require in person presence at Lancaster University. The balance of these will be agreed with the successful candidate.

You will join us on an indefinite contract. However, the role is contingent on external funding, which currently is due to end on 30th September 2028.

Informal enquiries can be made to DHR Head of Division Mark Limmer ([email protected] ) or RSS Co-Director Catherine Gedling ([email protected] ).
