Offer Description

We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Artificial Intelligence. The postholder will develop a research program under supervision of Professor Anita Grigoriadis, with the expectation that they will progress to independence. The developed program of research will be aimed at overcoming the barriers to translation of clinical AI for oncology.

As this is a wide area of research, the postholder will be expected to apply for funding to build and supervise a research group. Three main research areas will be explored:

Multimodal data integration – the postholder will adapt and apply modern AI architectures for multimodal data fusion, for use in a clinical context. In particular, they will develop models to combine digital pathology with transcriptomics data, as well as other modalities to facilitate improved clinical predictions.

Uncertainty quantification – the postholder will develop and apply state of the art statistical methodologies, to enable personalised uncertainty estimates, for predictions made by clinical AI.

Explainability – the postholder will apply standard approaches to explainability, based on attention mapping, as well as develop novel mathematical tools aimed at improving transparency of clinical AI.

The development of these 3 lines of research, will be facilitated by bench marking data sets describing digital pathology and transcriptomics, as well as clinical data collected within the KCL Hospital networks.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until March 2027

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent

Key Responsibilities

• To engage in research aimed towards advancing 3 key areas, which represent barriers to translation of clinical AI: uncertainty quantification, multimodal data integration and explainability.
• To collaborate in an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians and biologists to ensure clinical AI is developed with close consideration of clinical constraints and workflows.
• To direct and provide academic supervision to other staff and students as required
• To direct & devise new projects (aligned line with the three research goals above) and obtain external grant funding competitively to sustain and expand these projects
• To engage with industrial and academic partners to apply novel mathematical, statistical and machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to relevant problems
• To disseminate the research results through publication in scientific journals and presentation at appropriate conferences
• To participate in any laboratory duties commensurate with the grade as required
• Communicate with colleagues from different disciplines
• To promote the research group locally and nationally, disseminate research outcomes to advance knowledge in the field of research; represent the research group at external meetings/seminars and liaise with sponsors, stakeholders, national agencies, and professional bodies.

• Communicate complex information orally and in writing
• Help the supervisor to prepare proposals and applications to external bodies for funding or contractual purposes
• Communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature

• Join external networks to disseminate information and identify potential new collaborators
• To prepare and present regular accounts of progress to colleagues and line managers, and contribute to establishing a strategic direction for the wider group
• To manage and monitor research resources and budgets as required
• Use new research techniques and methods
• Identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio
• Contribute to collaborative decision making with colleagues in area of research
• To complete in a timely and collaborative manner assigned tasks required to fulfil the objectives of the projects and requests by the funding organisations.
• Develop research objectives for own or joint research, with the assistance of the supervisor
• Conduct individual and collaborative research projects
• to write funding applications for specific avenues of independent research
• Continually update knowledge and understanding in field
• Translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into research activity
• Analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes
• Work with colleagues from various disciplines on joint projects as required
• Collaborate with academic colleagues on areas of shared research interest
• Attend and contribute to relevant meetings
• Be involved in the assessment of student knowledge and supervision of projects
• Assist in the development of student research skills
• Balance with help the competing pressures of research and administrative demands and deadlines

• To act with sensitivity and considers the needs of others

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Bioinformatics or appropriate field of research 

Honours degree in Mathematics, Physics, Bioinformatics or appropriate field of research 

Significant research experience relevant to the collection and processing of scientific and clinical data 

Established international publication record in peer reviewed journals 

Ability to write and communicate effectively on data analysis and interpretation including evidence of presenting at international conferences 

Knowledge and experience with mathematical /statistical packages such as Python, R 

Demonstrable knowledge of current clinical workflows to which AI could be applied 

Experience with statistical approaches to uncertainty quantification, e.g. conformal prediction 

Experience with mathematical approaches to modelling complex dynamical systems, with relevance to explainability of deep learning, e.g, network theory, topological and geometrical data analysis 

Practical experience of algorithm development for transcriptomic data analysis 

Experience in the mathematical analysis of multimodality imaging and non-imaging data in clinical studies 

Ability to lead research programs and supervise the work of researchers 

Desirable criteria

Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and experience working in a clinical setting using clinical decision making workflows 

Strong software and programming skills (C, and/or Java) 

Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams

Affinity for communicating mathematical methods and results to non-mathematicians, in particular clinical audiences  

Teaching and/or lecturing experience
