Senior Research Fellow, Carbon 2D Material Applications

Updated: 12 months ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 09 Jun 2023

Job Description

We are looking for passionate, self-motivated, and ambitious team members who share our vision for the emerging field of 2D amorphous materials pioneered by our group. We design and synthesize of new 2D amorphous materials that manifest exceptional material properties and demonstrate new scientific phenomena.

Our team has recently discovered the world's first one-atom-thick amorphous material, a freestanding monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC). (Nature, 577(7789), 199-203, 2020). This discovery has not only answered the decades-old open-question about atomic arrangement in amorphous solids, but also revealed a plethora of potential applications including nanoelectronics, energy storage, proton membranes, catalysis, and many more. 2D amorphous structure consist of a wide distribution of bond angles and bond lengths, enabling material compositions that have no stable crystalline counterpart and manifesting unique material properties. The project aims to develop 2D amorphous materials to overcome material bottlenecks in targeted applications.

The candidate will:

  • Lead the project by identifying use cases, perform device prototyping and technology validation.
  • Drive commercialisation efforts by identifying and evaluating potential industry partners interested in collaborating on academic-based projects that involve emerging technologies, and initiate contact with them.
  • Establish and support academic collaborations with international academic researchers to meet the goals and priorities of the research projects.
  • Establish and support joint development agreements with industry partners, communicate project progress, and ensure that project objectives are met to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
  • Identify and develop new research proposals to apply for new research grants.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should hold a PhD in Physics, Material Science, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Electrical or Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Have at least 5 years of post-doctoral research experience and 5 years of industry experience at a leading company.
  • Have a detailed understanding of 2D materials synthesis and properties, and in-depth technical knowledge for potential applications.
  • Ability to lead and manage academic-based projects from conception to completion, ensuring that they meet the project goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets.
