Applications are invited for a research associate is sought to participate in the development of ferroelectric fast reactive tuners (FE-FRT) for RF cavities in particle accelerators. The post will be seconded to CERN and belonging to the Engineering Department of Lancaster University and the Cockcroft Institute of Accelerator Science and Technology, based at the Daresbury Laboratory.
Ferroelectric tuners are a cutting-edge development in superconducting RF systems as they allow fast tuning of the cavity frequency without mechanical tuning. The tuner is an external RF circuit where the RF resonance is tuned using a DC bias voltage across a ferroelectric capacitor. This can be used to cancel out microphonic vibrations, to account for a beam reactance or for tuning cavities where mechanical forces may result in surface cracking such as thin-film coated cavities.
The PDRA will join the internationally recognised group of RF engineers working on particle accelerators. The post will involve the design and experimental testing of FE-FRT on SRF cavities at CERN, and electromagnetic simulations/design to support the testing.
Applicants should have a PhD in a RF or Microwaves and experience in electromagnetic component design or testing at RF frequencies.
The appointment will be to university grade 7 and is a fixed term 24 month post.
