The School of Psychology and Therapeutic Studies, located in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education at the University of South Wales, is investing heavily in research activity and facilities with a primary focus on neuroscience and psychophysiology. The new facilities will include a designated neurophysiology laboratory space and significant investment in new EEG equipment for the purpose of hyperscanning and mobile EEG research. This investment will add to our existing equipment that includes Magstim EGI EEG system, a variety of Tobii eye trackers (stationary and mobile) and Mindmedia Nexus 10 biofeedback. The School is seeking a Senior Research Assistant to work on a range of exciting neuroscience project in social cognition, imagery and observation with a particular focus on sport teams. For example, we are currently embarking on a programme of research to explore the neurophysiological basis of joint/team actions in sport and examine the utility of specific interventions to enhance the function and performance of elite sports teams.

The post is managed by Prof David Shearer who is a Professor of Elite Performance Psychology. David’s research interests include the use of imagery and observation interventions to improve team functions, the exploration of participation motives in extremes sports, and bio/neurofeedback in sport and recovery. Across each research area there are existing projects (funded PhDs) and development plans for incorporating neurophysiology and psychophysiology.

You must have a good BPS accredited first degree in Psychology or Sport Science and a PhD (or M.Phil/MSc plus research experience) in a related area. Excellent quantitative research skills are essential, with experience of writing research papers for publication and funding applications also desirable. The successful applicant will be motivated, organized and able to work independently to deadlines and with attention to detail. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
