Applications are invited for a Temporary, post of a Senior Power Systems Researcher within UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Replacing synchronous machines by non-rotational sources has dramatic consequences on the dynamic response of the grid. Power electronics converters introduce faster dynamics than conventional controllers for both active and reactive power support. This creates unexpected couplings and control approaches based on time-scale separations may become less reliable and increasingly less valid.
Likewise, system control tasks predominantly provided by synchronous generators (such as voltage support and oscillation damping) have to be increasingly shouldered by non- synchronous devices. Since the time scales of power converters are so different from those of conventional devices, classical stability theory for power system does not apply anymore. It is then necessary to investigate new modelling approaches in support to stability studies that better fit with the required time-scale.
There is an urgent need for the development of robust and secure power-electronic-based inertial response, frequency and voltage controllers. In particular, the aggregation of distributed generators (DGs) and energy storage systems (ESSs) into virtual power plants (VPPs) appears a promising and, at the same time, challenging alternative to conventional power plants. From a system perspective, it is important to assess the interaction of VPPs with the grid and the impact of different control strategies on the stability of the overall power system
The focus of the Senior Power Systems Researcher post is to extend and integrate the frequency divider formula developed by UCD and define novel frequency control strategies for VPPs. Specific issues to be considered during the design of the controllers are the following. * The evaluation of the effects of distances among the available devices; bandwidth and delays of the communication systems that connects available resources; and regulatory aspects, such as the rules and rewards that defines the participation of DGs and ESSs in the VPP.
- The impact of stochastic resources and their volatility, on the control.
- The impact of different communication system strategies on the performance of the VPP and the resulting.
The post is funded through the project Horizon 2020 project "EdgeFLEX" that has been granted by the European Union. This project is highly interdisciplinary as it integrates areas of applied mathematics, automatic control, and computer science. The consortium includes academic partners, such as University of Aachen, Germany, and international companies, e.g., Ericsson, and several transmission and distribution system operators.
Salary Range: €47,000 - €60,000 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
