The Role and Department    

The Department of Physics at Durham University is one of the top UK Physics department with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and employability of our students. Ranked in the top 10 in REF2014 in terms of grid point average, 96% of Durham physics research was considered either to be of “internationally excellent quality” or “world teaching”.

The post holder will be responsible for the planning, design, development and production coordination of optical instrumentation projects with CfAI. The work will also entail the coordination of the resources of this specific project team to ensure the timely delivery of all projects. This will include forward planning and resource projection.

When required the post holder will also be responsible for technical find managerial support on projects working closely with both the internal and external stakeholders. They will also support proposal preparation specifically in relation to the technical specification and design.

Qualifications/Experience

1.     Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).

2.     Masters / PhD in a relevant discipline (or equivalent experience).  

3.     Professional practitioner with specialist knowledge and expertise to influence service delivery and activities within the organisation.

4.     Experience of participating in networks to share and discuss good practice and develop strong and productive working relationships.

5.     Experience of implementing policies and procedures and supporting service improvements.

6.     Expert knowledge and expertise in multiple areas of technical specialism, and the application of advanced skills to create, build, construct, analyse and realise new and innovative resources, equipment and research outputs.

7.     Experienced practitioner who has led teaching/research project working within an educational, commercial or industrial environment.

9.     Experience in the development of novel optical systems, techniques and technologies in support of the research goals of the CfAI.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

10.  Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.

11.  Strong digital competence across a range digital devices and apps including Microsoft 365 applications. Proficient in the use of Zemax software.

12.  Achievement of recognised industry and professional standards supported by relevant courses or certifications e.g. PhD/C.Phys in Physics, Optics, or related field.

    Typical Role Requirements  

    Service Delivery/Development

    ·       Show a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and the University’s values.

    ·       Work within CfAI’s internationally recognised research area of the development and application of advanced instrumentation in fields including astronomy, atmospheric monitoring, space instrumentation, fusion diagnostics and biophotonics in addition to supporting the development of new research areas.

    ·       Lead development of novel optical systems, techniques and technologies in support of the research goals of the CfAI.

    Communication/Liaison

    ·       Travel independently between the Physics Department on the Durham Science site and the CfAI research Institute out at Netpark, Sedgefield.
