An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to help the University of Surrey reduce its carbon emissions and make a real difference in fighting climate change.

Working with the Sustainability, Maintenance and Facilities teams, you will part of a three-person team, responsible for the planning & delivery of changes to building services systems to implement carbon and cost reductions, as well as surveying buildings to recommended costed and prioritised energy efficiency projects.

Role & Responsibilities:

Working alongside the Senior BMC & Controls Engineer, you’ll be tasked with auditing our buildings to identify energy efficiency measures, as well as identifying energy saving and good housekeeping measures to be implemented at low or no cost to the University.

There is a significant opportunity to make energy savings and improve operational efficiency.

Other responsibilities include:

• Review and evaluate building services operation and performance, including heating, ventilation, and the conditioning of air to evaluate what changes can be made to improve the efficient and optimal operation of services, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions and saving operational costs.

• Review control panels, fault finding down to a component level, and make recommendations to Heads of Sustainability and Maintenance for actuator, sensor and device replacement and calibration, assisting with replacement where necessary.

• Following consultation with the University’s BEMs manager and key faculty and department stakeholders, implement the recommissioning of building services to enable efficient operation leading to improved user experience, carbon, and cost savings, based on performance trends managed by the post holder.

• Analyse energy and environmental data to ascertain where carbon and cost savings can be made. Compile data from testing to provide evidence to prove the improvements made have contributed to carbon reductions and potential cost savings to utility bills.

• Work with the Senior Mechanical Engineer in the surveying of buildings to identify energy efficiency measure and projects including controls changes, metering, heating and ventilation systems and work with wider estates staff to identify fabric and lighting improvements, costing, and prioritizing these measures, building by building.

• Develop costed business cases for energy efficiency improvements, working with capital projects and procurement in the preparation of documentation.
