About the Role 

The School of Languages, Linguistics and Film invites applications from scholars of international distinction for an appointment in Sociolinguistics within the Department of Linguistics. The position can be filled at the level of Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor.

Applications are invited from candidates with substantial research and training expertise in both quantitative and qualitative subfields of sociolinguistics. Specialisations in such areas as language variation, sociolinguistic perception, gender and sexuality, linguistic anthropology, and/or interaction are of particular interest.

You will make significant contributions to the intellectual life of the school and research field of Sociolinguistics. You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including making innovations in key aspects of teaching and learning, supervision of students, which enhances student experience, as well as contributing as a senior academic to the wider achievements of the School.

You will make important research contributions within your field, advancing the subject or profession through publications, creative works and public engagement within sociolinguistics. You will also be responsible for supporting, mentoring and coaching research staff within their role and their wider career development, fostering collegiality through role-modelling and fulfil School wide responsibilities.

About You 

You will hold a PhD and/or relevant professional qualification and/or equivalent professional experience, together with the ability to deliver teaching and assessment, shaping and influencing the curriculum. The ability to work constructively and flexibly with colleagues, good organisational and communicative skills are also essential.  Candidates at the Professor level are expected to contribute to the development of the School’s teaching and research strategies.
