About Manufacturing
Cranfield Manufacturing (which includes major activities in Materials) is following the ambitious strategy of developing a roadmap for a Sustainable Manufacturing Sector for 2050 by applying fundamental science and thought leadership via conceiving and maturing the concepts of Smart, Clean and Green manufacturing solutions agnostically across all sectors and through all tiers of the supply chain with SMEs as well as OEMs. This is to support the national aspiration of Net Zero UK by 2050. We offer world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability. They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).
About the Role
This role sits within the Surface Engineering and Precision Centre (SEPc). SEPc is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in material research and development. Its research covers 2 main specialisms, Coating/Surface Engineering and Device/SmartMaterials; both aiming to undertake world-leading research in the areas of materials engineering and functional materials.
Each specialism is supported through distinct organisational structures based on research groups with particular disciplinary expertise (e.g. metallic materials and intermetallics, polymers, nanotechnology, coating technology), and research themes (e.g. biomedical, high temperature materials, corrosion and protection), which facilitate cross-disciplinary interaction between research groups, other schools, research institutes in the University, and external organisations. These cross-domain groups, together, deliver our strategy of opening the door to new technologies, whether they are in sustainably, aeronautics, biomedical, sensors or surface engineering.
This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a leading role within SEPc’s ‘High Temperature Surface Engineering’ group and it focuses on materials and coating systems for application in extreme, high temperature, environments for aerospace and energy sectors. A major activity is the development of high temperature surface engineering and coating solutions, including corrosion-resistant coatings, environmental barriers and thermal barrier coatings, and such from the material development stage to prototype component manufacture.
About You
You will have a PhD in a Materials Science/Engineering related field, with experience in Surface Engineering (experimental and/or modelling) or/and coating manufacturing methods (i.e. CVD, PVD, EB-PVD, thermal spraying or/and plasma assisted deposition methods), and/or coating performance. With an outstanding world-class track record of research in high temperature surface engineering, evidenced by high-profile publications in the top peer reviewed journals, books and research reports and in developing research proposals, you will have a substantial reputation in your field. You will have a clear record of impact, having generated substantial and sustained research income, successfully securing funding from research councils. You will also have excellent communication and leadership skills and be able to form effective internal and external collaborations. Ideally, you will have specialist knowledge in a broad range of the Surface Engineering key research themes and experience in developing and delivering teaching programmes, especially at post-graduate level.
In return, you will be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and working environment.
Our Values
Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here . We aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together and realise their full potential.
Diversity and Inclusion
Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from this group.
To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.
Flexible Working
We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here .
