The above part-time (0.2 - 0.4FTE) post is available immediately on a two year fixed term contract in the Clinical Education Development and Research (CEDAR), within Psychology. 

The role

We are seeking to appoint a new Senior Lecturer with a particular interest in the development and delivery of an innovative and trail blazing new mental health training for practitioners working with children and young people experiencing severe and complex needs.

CEDAR (Clinical Education Development and Research) is an applied psychological centre of excellence whose core mission is to grow and develop the psychological workforce, maximising their impact through training and development, service transformation and research and evaluation.  In doing so we aim to ensure access to evidence based psychological practice that leads to positive outcomes for service-users, service providers and funders across England and beyond.  CEDAR’s impact is achieved through CEDAR CREATE through its Consultation, Research and Evaluation, Transformation and executive education activity resulting in significant benefits to service provision alongside more effective and acceptable interventions for service users.

Main purpose of the job:  

The Youth Intensive Psychological Practitioner is a Health Education England funded post-graduate certificate training programme that will develop and train a practitioner role to support and deliver active contribution to assessment, formulation and focussed interventions with young people who may be experiencing a crisis and / or severe or complex mental health needs. The training will ensure the Youth Intensive Psychological Practitioners are equipped with the skills and knowledge to support the delivery of safe and effective care to young people who are severely unwell and may have complex needs.

Trainees’ learning will include assessed practical experience with young people and their parents, families and carers in both in-patient and community mental health settings, including intensive home treatment teams, learning and practicing under close supervision as integral members of the multi-disciplinary teams. Trainees will learn to form resilient collaborative relationships with young people and with the staff teams around them, contributing to improvements in the psychological care of the young people.

The Youth Intensive Psychological Practitioner (YIPP) role is designed to support and deliver under close supervision, assessment, formulation and a subset of psychological interventions with young people aged 13 to 17 years who are experiencing a range of severe and complex mental health needs.  Although some mental health presentations in this context are more commonly seen in inpatient settings (eating disorders, emerging ‘emotionally unstable personality disorder’, depression and self-harm sometimes with co-existing neurodevelopmental challenges), this cohort of young people is inherently broad and diverse in range. 

Specific Purposes of the job: 

• Lead on the development and delivery of the Programme in line with the curriculum
• Lead and oversee the assessment strategy including module descriptors, marking process in line with TQA 
• Moderate assessments across the programme
• Lead on  Accreditation/ registration submissions as needed 
• Support and mentor programme team members
• Lead on recruitment alongside with the support of the Clinical and Academic Leads
• Provide teaching as needed
• Support the Director of Portfolio with strategic and commissioning developments
• Contribute to regional and national committees as needed
• Contribute to CEDAR and college working groups and developments as needed

About you

For a Senior Lecturer post you will:

• Possess a depth or breadth of specialist knowledge demonstrated by a doctorate level training or the necessary equivalent in Clinical Psychology or related clinical area such as Counselling Psychology, Family Therapy, Mental Health Nurse Consultant or similar. You will demonstrate core knowledge relating to academic area of acute psychiatric inpatient and/or outreach/community care for children and young people in order to teach and support learning. 

• Possess a good honours degree in Psychology or a related discipline (at least a 2:1 or equivalent)

• Have a consistent track record of excellent teaching across a variety of modules and levels within your discipline as might be expected of a very experienced clinical trainer.
• Contribute to the design, development and delivery a range of modules or programmes at various levels; applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques; identifying sources of funding and securing funds for own scholarly activities and providing academic leadership to those working within programme areas.

• Be expected to work towards Principle Fellow of the HEA and to attend formal CPD relating to this.
