The College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences is seeking to appoint Senior Lecturers/Lecturers working in the area of Artificial intelligence for Bioscience and Health in areas of our research expertise: Cancer Science, Disease Mechanisms, Epidemiology, Pathogens: Virology, Bacteria or Parasites, Immunology and Inflammation, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases, Neuroimaging, Imaging and Spatial Biology, Quantitative and Computational Biology, Social Artificial Intelligence, One Health, Health and Well-Being, or Wildlife Conservation.

You will be at the forefront of developing and/or applying Artificial Intelligence techniques that are understandable and capable of empowering discovery science tailored to one or more of the College's areas of research expertise. This role is pivotal in contributing to the College's objective of integrating advanced AI methodologies (such as Large Language Models, Foundation Vision Models, Representation Learning for biomedical data, and Explainable AI) into our broad spectrum of research disciplines. You will be affiliated with one of our Schools within MVLS, https://www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/mvls. Consideration for joint appointments with the College of Science and Engineering, e.g., the School of Computer Science https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing, is open, depending on expertise and alignment with research strategies.

The successful candidates will have a track record of publications in prominent journals and conferences, presentations at international meetings/symposia, and participation in advisory/review groups and/or panels.

Job Purpose

The post holder will be expected to develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of an international standard and contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organizing, and reviewing agreed teaching, assessment and administration processes to enhance learning and teaching.

In addition, the post holder will contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, contribute to learning and teaching of machine learning/artificial intelligence on agreed programmes, and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.

2. Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking knowledge exchange activities.

3. Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.

4. Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.

5. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

6. Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.

7. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.

8. Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

9. Supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students

10. Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.

11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

13. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

For appointment at Grade 9:

14. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy.  Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within Human Resource Management area and to represent the University externally.

15. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.

16. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.

17. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams (beyond subject/school level).

18. Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.

19. Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online provision.

20. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.

21. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.

22. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.

23. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Qualifications

Essential

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with a growing international reputation for scholarship within the subject area.

A2. Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate.

For appointment at Grade 9:

A3. Recognised expertise in subject discipline/specialism to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

A4. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

A5.  Engagement with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions.

C1. Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline to enable development of research and teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.

C2. Established reputation in research and teaching, including an international research profile in the subject area.

C3. Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.

C4. Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and developing early career academic colleagues.

C5. Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.

C6. Established track record of research outputs and of applying for, and securing, external research funding compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.

C7. Experience and achievement in the relevant field reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio.

C8. Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.

C9. Track record of continuous engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

C10. Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.

C12. Proven ability to plan and lead staff, and efficiently deploy resources, in support of major research and teaching activities.

C17. Substantial track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the REF

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8/9, £48,350 - £56,021/£57,696 - £64,914 annum
