Brunel University London is seeking to appoint an experienced medical educator to provide leadership of Clinical Communication teaching, assessment and curriculum development at Brunel Medical School (BMS). The post is a permanent academic (education) position.

BMS is London’s newest Medical School, responsible for the 5-year MBBS undergraduate programme and the 2-year Physician Associate (PA) MSc programme. The PA programme was established in 2016 and the MBBS in 2022. The successful applicant will be responsible for leading teaching of Clinical Communication for both student groups. The Medical School benefits from sector-leading facilities, including 18 simulated consultation rooms with audio-visual connectivity throughout.

The programme of Clinical Communication is a key feature of the 5-year MBBS, running across all years of the course. Other distinctive features include early contact with patients, team-based learning (TBL), programmatic assessment with academic coaching, and a House Tutor support system. Currently, all Brunel medical students are international, and they will be joined by UK students from September 2024.

The Brunel Physician Associate (PA) MSc programme was established in 2016 and joined the Medical School in August 2023. Clinical Communication is taught in Year 1, when the PA students are predominantly campus-based and in year 2, when they return from placements to campus for teaching one afternoon each week. Currently, MBBS and PA students have limited opportunities to learn together and Clinical Communication sessions are taught separately.

Reporting to the BMS Director of Medical Education, the successful applicant will be a key member of the medical education team, responsible for overseeing all aspects of Clinical Communication teaching, assessment and curriculum development, including recruitment and training of tutors; contribution to OSCE scenario writing workshops; and contribution to training of OSCE examiners. The successful applicant will also work closely with our simulated patient (SP) provider to ensure adequate provision of trained SPs for teaching and OSCE.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Lead for Clinical Skills (MBBS), PA Module Leads and other BMS staff to ensure students develop the skills they need to become safe, compassionate doctors and PAs. The School is exploring interprofessional learning (IPL) initiatives to enable MBBS, PA and other healthcare students to learn about, from and with each other.

This post would be ideally suited to an experienced medical educator with expertise in Clinical Communication, an ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, a passion for education and enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment.

The post is based in Uxbridge at the campus of Brunel University, London.

Closing date for applications:  15 April 2024

Interviews will take place week commencing 29 April 2024
